Why Do You Want to Change?
September 9, 2010 No Comments
There are lots of reasons to want to change. You may want to lose weight so you can fit into your wedding dress. You may want to start a new career because you absolutely hate your current one.
There are good reasons to change and achieve goals. And then there are bad reasons.
But how do you identify a bad reason for having a goal?
It all boils down to whether you actually want to change.
So ask yourself these questions…
- Did I come up with this goal on my own?
- Was this goal suggested to me by others?
- Did I choose this goal because I felt pressured?
- Does thinking about the end result make me happy?
- Did I choose this goal because it’s what I think I’m supposed to be?
- Do I know, deep down, that this goal/change is good for me?
- Do I actually want this change?
After answering these questions, you’ll have a better understanding of why you want to change.
Healthy Reasons to Reach a Goal
- To improve as a person.
- To have a better life.
- It’s something I always wanted to do/be.
- It will make me healthier and live longer.
- I want to.
Unhealthy Reasons to Reach a Goal
- Someone told me to do it.
- I feel peer pressure.
- Only to make others happy.
- I’ve been given an ultimatum.
- I feel it’s how society wants me to be.
Now, there are two things you can do if you are trying to change for the wrong reasons: You can stop trying to achieve the goal, or you can come up with your own, healthier reasons for doing it.
Because, really, you need to achieve your dreams and become a better you because you want to, and not because of other people.
