Clean Your Desk!

July 31, 2009 No Comments

A clear desk can mean a clear mind.

Having trouble focusing and getting motivated? Do what I did…clean your desk!

If you have a goal that can be reached by using your desk or office, cleaning it up will help you regroup. Here’s some possible goals that can be cured by a good spring summer cleaning:

  • Write the next Great American Novel.
  • Get a promotion by being more productive at work.
  • Stop wasting time on soul-sucking websites (Facebook, anyone?).

Recently I was having a lot of trouble getting motivated. Since I work from home, I spend all day in my office. It was a mess. Then I decided to clean it (and add a nice bouquet of flowers) and I feel a lot better.

Don’t just clean your desk…

Regardless of your goal, cleaning can help get your priorities straight. I’m not talking about cleaning your whole house. Instead, focus on the area related to your goal.

For instance, if you’re committing yourself to exercise, clean up your in-home fitness area. Stop using your treadmill as a fancy coat rack.

Or, if you’re trying to eat healthy, do a complete overhaul of your kitchen. Get rid of any junk food or items you think you’re never going to eat. Clean out the cupboards and start fresh.

Cleaning and organizing the space will help you get your priorities straight. Plus, you can make room for your motivational collage.
